This section contains information which can be applied to the kanji system as a whole. Understanding features of the overall system can help to remove some of the fear of the enormity of the kanji learning task.
The first topic, on and kun readings, explains why kanji can be pronounced differently depending on whether they are used as single-unit kanji or in compounds.
The subsequent four sections, stroke order, radicals, rikusho and compound formation, describe how the kanji system can be broken down into a number of sub-systems with set principles or rules. Knowledge of these systems can provide a basic framework within which to organize learning.
